My Half-assed 2011 Year in Review and January 2012 Playlist
I didn’t give up on this blog, I swear. I think I just forgot about doing it. I’m back though. I’ll try to be more regular about it from now on.
In case you were wondering, since I didn’t do a full on top album list like last year, my favourite album of 2011 was probably The Black Keys – El Camino? It came out pretty late in the year but the riffs were mind blowing, it was energetic and very driving. I was asked last night why I like it so much. To me, it not only sounds like real Rock n Roll, it feels like real, genuine Rock n Roll which is something that is kind of lost on this generation. There’s a ton of shit that you have to sift through, sometimes with rubber gloves to find real good music, but it’s out there.
My most listened to song according to my Last.fm was Yonkers – Tyler the Creator. If you’ve heard it before, then you’re most likely sick of it by now. Most people don’t get it, when I tell them that I love Tyler the Creator and OFWGKTA. I guess it just awakens the rebel inside of me that wants to kill people, burn shit, and fuck school. If you get it, you get it. If you don’t get it, then whatever, move on, it’s not for you.
My guilty pleasures were probably Niggas in Paris by Jay-Z and Kanye West, Superbass by Nicky Minaj and I Love You Like a Love Song by Selena Gomez. That shit cray
I think I’m going to tweak things a bit this year. I’m switching to monthly playlists. Here’s the music I kicked it to in January :
All 90s music! No boy bands. This is the quintessential 90s music primer for when we figure out how to thaw out cavemen and want to make them awesome. Jam packed with 100 songs from the most awkward decade, although some straddle the line from ‘89 and 2000 because they still exude the 90s feel. Enjoy!
Happy late (Canadian) Thanksgiving! In my head, Canadian Thanksgiving is the story of the Canadian version of Christopher Columbus, Jacques Cartier, force-feeding pumpkin pie to a turkey while native Canadians thank him for helping them harvest yams. Classic. I am thankful this year for my excellent memory for Canadian history.
I’m experimenting with HTML5 audio tags so check that out in the near future. I honestly don’t know what I’m doing. Check out the songs below!
From their new album Audio,Video,Disco due out very soon. Doesn’t really sound like Justice, but they were trying out 70s style Rock for this album. I like it.
I have a whopping 11 songs today. Ok, 11 isn’t really a lot but I’ve always wanted to use the word ‘whopping’ but never understood it’s use as an adjective. Someone please explain it to me.
Anyways, here are some songs that have been on repeat recently. I’m a big fan of all the artists. Girls and St. Vincent have released incredible new albums which you should definitely check out if you like what you hear.
Alex Turner of The Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets released an EP for a movie called Submarine a few months back and I’m still in love with it.
The Ratatat remix is super old, so is the Arctic Monkeys song, but I got to see them live this week. I almost punched someone in the throat because it was so awesome.
I also am into covers of rap and RnB songs done by alternative artists.
I posted this playlist to 8track.com which is a neat little website and app that let’s you listen to user submitted playlists. Link right here peep that shit.
