Music Monday: What’s in a Remix?

I’ve always frowned upon remixes. I’ve always thought of them as disrespectful to the original artist. Like as if someone took a song and said “I know this is your work of art that you perfected enough to share with the world, but I’m going to make it better.” It’s a strange phenomenon only seen (heard) in music. I mean, you don’t see anyone “remixing” the Mona Lisa do you?

Even in music, there are certain songs or artists that I would consider off limits, if such a thing even exists. Classic rock for example, The Beatles, Led Zep, Pink Floyd. Can you really remix that and make it sound better than the original? Dare you? These people were geniuses at their craft. Can a guy who has a cracked version of Fruity Loops on a laptop his mom bought him stand beside these great bands? Put like that, most likely not. But I did manage to find a couple of remixes that I found actually pretty listenable albeit for totally different reasons than the originals. I thought they used the samples of the originals in an interesting way and it seemed to work. Check em out:

Pink Floyd - Time (Pretty Lights remix) - One of my favorite albums of all time is The Dark Side Of the Moon and this remix plays well on the highs and lows of the song very well. The whole Pretty Lights remix album has a couple of gems on it actually.

The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby (4centers Dubstep remix) - Nothing will ever supplement the amazing string arrangement in Eleanor Rigby, but anything wobbly these days seems to find a special place in my heart.
