My Top 25 Albums of 2010

I don’t know what to say. I’d hate to be a cliche Facebook profile, but “music is my life! LOL.” It is in fact part of my everyday life, from when “Wake Up” by The Arcade Fire wakes me up at 7 a.m everyday until the night when I listen to some gangsta ass lullabies to help me sleep. It seems a bit weird to rank music. I don’t rank other aspects of my every day life. I don’t rank my favorite pair of jeans, my favorite meal of the year, and I certainly don’t rank my friends and family members. Interestingly enough too, I don’t ever list my favorite movies. In fact, I’ve remained consciously secretive about what my favorite movie of all time is. I have my reasons. Anyways, maybe its the way iTunes and Last.fm are set up, the way you can rate music and view your playcount so easily. Just something to think about. With that in mind, here is my list of top albums of 2010.

If you feel like I left anything out, leave me a comment or get at me social network style.

Here we go:

25.Sidewalks - Matt & Kim - What I like about this album is that I keep finding myself going back to it and listening to it in its entirety. It’s catchy and simple, yet very intricate at the same time.

Killer Track : Cameras

24.Spoon - Transference - According to the legend, Spoon releases a good album every second album. This is the inbetween album. It’s not that it isn’t good, because it is. It’s just that it leaves something to be desired.

Killer Track : Written in Reverse

23.Stars -The Five Ghosts -An all around good effort from a band Canadians have come to love. Its too bad that they couldn’t step up their game like Metric did with Fantasies. Amy Milan’s smooth voice will still make me melt all the time.

Killer Track : Fixed

22.Broken Social Scene -Forgiveness Rock Record : Growth, acceptance, and forgiveness. That’s what this album is all about. It’s easy to write songs about love. Dime a dozen thems songs. But as a maturing group, this is a collection of songs about forgiveness, which is something so much harder to do.

Killer Track : Texico Bitches, Sentimental X’s (w/ Emily Haines)

21.Robyn - Body talk : This is electropop done right. Released in three parts throughout the year, this album surprised me more than a lot of albums this year. Although hailing from Stockholm Sweden, Robyn has an authentic hip-hop swagger. Along with her smooth singing and catchy lyrics, this album proves that she is a heavy hitter in the pop world.

Killer Tracks : Fembot, Dancing On My Own

20.Deadmau5 - 4x4=12 I profiled a Deadmau5 track a couple of weeks ago. Everything I said about it applies to the album.

Killer Track : Raise Your Weapon, Sofi Needs a Ladder

19.Sleigh Bells - Treats: This album is meant to be loud. A lot of good things come from hearing things loud. One of those things is this album. Incredibly energetic and insanely entertaining all the way through.

Killer Tracks : Rill Rill, Crown on the Ground

18.Daft Punk - Tron Legacy Soundtrack - A match seemingly made in heaven, Daft Punk returns with new material for the first time in a long time for a sequel to a cult classic film. (I hate the term cult classic. To me it just means that not many people like it, but weird people do.) With a style that you surely will be familiar with, Daft Punk proves that they are still, not only alive, but relevant in the electronic industry.

Killer Tracks : Derezzed, The Grid

17.Eminem - Recovery - In my opinion, an angry Eminem is always the best Eminem, and in this album he is fucking livid. He seems so much more lucid and convincing when he is so. Maybe it’s because I was never a fan of the goofy shit he did, but the more personal songs he’s done seems to hit home a lot harder.

Killer Tracks: Won’t Back Down (ft. P!nk), No Love (ft. Lil Wayne), Love the Way you Lie (ft Rihanna)

16.Band of Horses- Infinite Arms : I was trying to find something bad to say about this album but I really couldn’t, except maybe it demands a certain mood. It’s really dreamy and at sometimes melancholic.

Killer Tracks : Factory, Compliments

15.KiD CuDi- Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager : Speaking of melancholy, the sophomore effort from CuDi is a window into the soul of the perverse, and self described lonely stoner. This is the continuation of what seems to be a very dark and deep story of his life. He really has a way of captivating the mood he wants you to feel about him. Last year, I rated his first album fairly high on my list of favorite albums and I felt this album was a cool project although I always felt I that I was never high enough to fully enjoy it for what it was. I still feel like it was a definite step forward in Cudder’s development as a musician and as the person he wants to be.

Killer Tracks : Erase Me (ft Kanye West), REVOFEV, Mr. Rager

14. Mumford and Sons - Sigh No More : Some friends and I were discussing why Mumford and Sons were so hot this year. It’s really nothing new. You could throw a crumpet in any direction in the U.K and you’re bound to hit a great acoustic folk band. What worked in their favor was timing. This album was released at the perfect time and caught the attention of a lot of people in a progressively electronic era of music.

Note. this album was released last year in the U.K but in 2010 in North America.

Killer Tracks : Little Lion Man, Sigh No More, After The Storm

13.M.I.A - MAYA :Commercially, M.I.A may be a one hit wonder but I’m sure after listening to this album, she wouldn’t want it any other way. Its an interesting paradox seen in most recording artists where they want to be recognized but at the same time, stay true to their style without trying to appease anyone. Classic M.I.A tracks are found on this album.

Killer Tracks : XXXO, Teqkilla

12.MGMT -Congratulations : They may be weird but musically, they are inspiring. One indication for me of a great album for an artist is whether I prefer to listen to their newest album over their older ones. Unfortunately, I do still find myself going back to Oracular Spectacular more than this one. It is however incredibly ambitious and psychedelic which is what I love about it. Still though, their style can be too much sometimes which I can see as a drawback for the casual listener. Those that love them, love them a lot.

Killer Track : Flash Delirium

11.LCD Soundsystem -This is Happening : Solid all the time. It’s clear that he knows what he’s doing and far be it from me to say anything about that. He’s not pushing the envelope, he invented paper. He is a legend in his own right. I want to keep driving forever when this is on in the car.

Killer Tracks : Drunk Girls, All I Want, Pow Pow

10.Broken Bells -Broken Bells: James Mercer of the Shins, and Danger Mouse. Sounds pretty cool right? It is cool. But please, on this album, he’d prefer it if you called him by his proper name, Brian Burton. I love a lot of things about this album. I think the collision from two different worlds to produce some pretty catchy song is a huge draw to this album.

Killer Tracks: The High Road, Vaporize, The Ghost Inside.

9. Beach House - Teen Dream : No, I do not mean Katy Perry. Her album may have a similar title but is in now way on the same level as this duo. Although it was released early in the year, I still find myself listening to it all the time. Amazing vocal tracks, and dreamy synth and guitar riffs makes this record a must listen.

Killer Tracks: Zebra, Norway, Silver Soul

8. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest : Another album I find myself subconsciously scrolling down to. They very much remind me believe it or not, of the Beatles halfway through their career infused with styles borrowed from the Arcade Fire. Its almost too good to be true. Incredibly solid all the way through.

Killer Tracks : Don’t Cry, Revival, Memory Boy

7. Gorillaz - Plastic Beach : If this is the last Gorillaz album, would people be satisfied? I don’t think so. Although as not finely put together as Demon Days, Plastic Beach is still well produced and explores a lot of different music styles. Would I ever listen to the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music? Probably not. Did I enjoy its inclusion on this album? Absolutely. The fact that when it was mashed in with Grime hip-hop from Bashy and Kano on White Flag proves that Damon Albarn is always trying to push the boundaries in music production.

Killer Tracks: On Melancholy Hill, Rhinestone Eyes, White Flag, Superfast Jellyfish

6. Vampire Weekend - Contra: Another Sophomore album on the list. It’s clean but at the same time so complicated. I love a lot of things about Vampire Weekend but I think the thing that I love most is how their sound is so honest. I’m trying not to sound like a douche, but it is so important for musicians to be honest to themselves. This album is entirely convincing of that notion and truly portrays the difference between “Rock n Roll” and “Complete Control.”

Killer Tracks : Giving Up the Gun, Cousins, Holiday

5. My Chemical Romance - Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys - I know that a few weeks ago, I stated that this was the Rock Album of the year. I will retract and say that it is the best pop Rock album of the year. Undercut by critics based on the band’s younger fan following, I think this album is a huge underdog. Definitely check it out before writing it off.

Killer Tracks : Bulletproof Heart, Na Na Na, S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W

4.The National - High Violet : High Violet captivated me the first time I listened to it. Do not take this album lightly. It is serious business. The lyrics are incredibly sincere and really makes you sit back and think about your life and say “Well shit…what now?” It’s almost an exhausting experience, but listen to it with an open ear and you will find yourself discovering a lot more than you would think.

Killer Tracks : Sorrow, Anyone’s Ghost, Conversation 16, Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks

3.The Black Keys - Brothers : I think I listened to this album more than anything this year. Although nothing I can say will make you listen to it if you haven’t already. I’m sure of it. Just do it. I promise you won’t be disappointed. I also did a mini review of this album, back then.

Killer tracks : Black Mud, Too Afraid to Love You, Sinister Kid

2. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy : Kanye West is a monster. Everybody knows it. I reviewed this album recently too.

Killer Tracks : Monster, POWER, All of the Lights

1. Arcade Fire -The Suburbs : My Canadian pride can be divided, but are not limited to some pretty simple characteristics. I love hockey, I love Canadian Beer, and I love Rush and Metric. I can firmly say that I believe I can add that I feel so proud to be Canadian when I talk about the Arcade Fire. Recently nominated for a Grammy for album of the year and for some pretty damn good reason too. While you can pick out certain songs from their previous album as standouts, this one is not quite the same. All the way through, this album is perfect. I feel like overhype and praise leads to doubt but this album truly deserves it. Album of the year.

Killer Tracks : The whole thing.

Honourable Mentions:

Taylor Swift - Speak Now. I know, I know. Say what you will but Gotdamn, this girl can write some good pop music. (See also : repetitive yet totally working formula)

Girl Talk -All Day - He is becoming the standard in Mash-ups. Good for a listen.

Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History- Harmless and fun electro-pop. Not enough guts on the album for me to make the list.

Cee-Lo Green -The Lady Killer - The most infectious song of the year was quite possibly ‘Fuck You’ and if you liked that song then “Go on run and tell yo lil boyfriend.”
